Mining Locomotive Maintenance Checklist

Maintenance intervals and limits must come from the equipment manual, risk assessment, mine rules and local regulations. This checklist is a planning aid and does not replace model-specific instructions.

Pre-shift observations

  • Check for visible damage, loose parts, leaks, abnormal contamination and evidence of overheating.
  • Verify braking, controls, warning devices, lights, communication devices and emergency functions before service.
  • Inspect wheels, accessible running gear, couplers and safety connections for damage or abnormal wear.
  • Confirm the route is clear and that rail, switches, overhead supply or charging equipment are in serviceable condition.
  • Record defects and remove equipment from service when a defect may affect safe operation.

Items for scheduled maintenance planning

  • Brake wear, adjustment, response and stopping-performance checks under the approved procedure.
  • Wheel condition, wheel diameter differences, bearings, suspension and running-gear fasteners.
  • Couplers, draw gear, safety chains or secondary retention, and mine-car interfaces.
  • Control equipment, contactors, wiring, insulation, protective devices, sensors and connectors.
  • Motor condition, ventilation paths, abnormal noise, temperature, brushes or bearings where applicable.
  • Lubrication points and consumables using the specified type, quantity and interval.

Power-system-specific checks

  • For battery equipment: enclosure, connectors, cables, state of charge, temperature, charger condition and any battery-management alarms.
  • For trolley equipment: pantograph or collector condition, contact surfaces, insulation, cable security and the condition of the overhead supply interface.
  • Use only approved isolation, charging and electrical test procedures; do not improvise around stored energy or live conductors.

Minimum maintenance record

  • Equipment identifier, operating hours or distance, inspection date and responsible person.
  • Observed defect, risk decision, corrective work, parts used and test after repair.
  • Recurring defects and trend information that may justify an engineering review or interval change.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a mining locomotive be inspected?

Use the model manual, mine rules, risk assessment and local regulations to set pre-use and scheduled intervals. Operating severity and defect history may justify shorter intervals.

Can a generic checklist replace the manufacturer manual?

No. A generic checklist helps organize work, but model-specific limits, procedures, parts and safety instructions must come from the approved documentation.

What should happen when a safety-related defect is found?

The equipment should be controlled according to the site defect procedure and not returned to service until an authorized person has assessed, repaired and tested it as required.

Should battery and trolley locomotives use the same electrical checklist?
